America the Beautiful 2011

My mother and I just returned from our two-week adventure to the American west.

Warning: it's going to take me a while to blog about all of it. We brought back a TON of photos.

First problem: volume. We brought back 3,583 photos. That's nearly double the photos we took on our Down Under tour (1,848) and more than double our photos from our Antiquities tour (1,780).

Second problem: identification. The photos from this trip are difficult to place in context. The places we visited rarely had detailed maps to distinguish landmarks. So, a picture of a geyser could be the "Plume Geyser" or the "Fountain Geyser". My apologies if I screw up.

First stop: Badlands National Park in central South Dakota.

Next stop: the Black Hills in western South Dakota.

Highlights included Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave.

We then traveled to western Wyoming. The area is home to several national forests and two national parks. We passed through Yellowstone first, but we started our main sightseeing in the Grand Tetons.

We spent a lot of time in Yellowstone. Most visitors only breeze through, but we wanted to see absolutely everything Yellowstone had to offer.

Speaking of breezing through, our final stop was at Devils Tower in eastern Wyoming.

Our trek covered 3,679 miles. (By comparison, a one-way trip from Seattle to Miami would only be 3,300 miles.)

We touched five states (six for me, if you count Illinois).
Wisconsin
Minnesota
South Dakota
Wyoming
Montana (briefly)
