When the pharaoh Narmer united Upper (South) and Lower (North) Egypt around 3100 B.C., he needed a new capital. Thus, he founded the city of Memphis.
There's not much left of Memphis. It's mostly just a few statues and some touts selling their wares.

This is a statue of Ramses II. His legs are damaged (probably caused by the annual floods), so he reclines under a roof where tourists can view him from the ground floor or from above.

His fist was perhaps three feet high. He clutches the hilt of a missing sword.

This is a cute alabaster sphinx is from the New Kingdom.
The cab driver couldn't say "sphinx", so instead he said "s-finkeez".

There are two outdoor statues of Ramses II, too. Here's one.

Here's the other.
