Day 4: Mount Rushmore

Today we visit iconic Mount Rushmore.

Well hello there, fellas! It's good to finally see you in person!

As you approach the monument, you walk through the Avenue of Flags. These pillars fly the flags of all fifty states plus the District of Columbia, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands, and the commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. That's 56 flags in all. They're displayed in alphabetical order.

See all that debris under the faces? That's left over from the blasting and chiseling. It's a little untidy to leave the scraps behind, but if you walk the Presidential Trail along the base of the mountain, you can get a much closer look. You can even see the holes the workers drilled to place dynamite. It's actually pretty cool. We were lucky enough to walk the trail as part of a ranger program.
