Welcome to Hotel Ilkay.
It reminded us a lot of the hotel we stayed at in Athens, but not quite as good. The receptionist was hospitable, but couldn't possibly measure up to the warm welcome we received at the Economy. He told us where to go for breakfast, but neglected to tell us about the free Internet access in the lounge (we discovered that on our own the last night there). He also didn't tell us whether or not to leave the key during the day nor where to go for sightseeing, etc. We got so spoiled at the Economy.
This was our room. I don't think they changed the sheets every day, but I could be wrong. It needed new carpet and paint, but it was certainly not smelly or disgusting. In fact, I kind of liked its homey atmosphere. Our room was on the front of the building on the first floor (second floor to Americans). Light sleepers would have had trouble with tram and street noise. We left the TV tuned to BBC News all night and kept the A/C fan running. I never missed a wink.
You sort of had to watch your head as you passed between the foot of the beds and the wall else you'd bang it on the lamp (or at least the freshly sink-laundered socks hanging from it...not pictured here).

My purse got dirty on one of the conveyors at the Cairo airport, so I washed that, too, and hung it from this lamp.
This was the only hotel we stayed at without a fridge.
